Injury Treatment

There are 2 types of injuries that occur to the human movement system otherwise known as the musculo-skeletal system.

1. Acute or sudden injuries (FREE ACC follow up appointments)

These are generally more serious injuries and must be treated more aggressively initially.

Depending on the tissue injured, a period of rest is generally issued. This could be in the form of reducing activities and strapping through to the worst case scenario of immobilisation with moonboots or casts.

Once the initial inflammation and swelling has settled, rehabilitation is started as soon as possible. This is in the form of massage, stretching, strengthening and then progressively loading the injured area with normal movements and activities.

2.Chronic Injuries (Only covered by ACC if caused by work)

Often called overuse injuries, these are where the load placed on a tissue over an extended period of time is too much for the tissue. This causes the tissue to break down and scar. These injuries are most often caused by the following factors, ranked from most to least important.

  1. Errors in how you train, exercise or work. This is made up of one or more of the following factors:
    1. Doing too much too soon
    2. Doing movements for too long
    3. Exercising too frequently
    4. Moving too intensely.
  2. Strength and Conditioning of the body
      1. Strength
    1. Flexibility
    2. Balance
    3. Body weight to fat ratio
  3. Biomechanical faults when exercising or with poor posture at work.
  4. Footwear- Too old or not matched to your foot function properly.
