Biomechanical Exams

Biomechanical Examinations

This is the study of how we move, sometimes called gait analysis. This looks at how muscles, joints and body parts move in relation to each other and how they influence each other. There is no absolute ideal biomechanical technique, we are not robots, we are human but our individual techniques can be fine tuned.

After a thorough history taking, a biomechanical examination will involve the following assessments of the foot and lower limb.

-Non weight-bearing assessment

  • Joint range of motion
  • Joint Positions
  • Muscle Length
  • Muscle strength

-Weight bearing assessment

  • Movement tests
  • Muscle testing
  • Functional testing

-Running and Walking analysis

  • Analysis is done on a treadmill or open space and is sometimes¬†recorded

After analysis, a custom treatment plan can be issued to target any faults, weaknesses or injury prone areas. Treatment can consist of one of a combination of the following

-Footwear prescription

-Orthotics prescription

-Exercises for strength, flexibility or endurance

-Exercise programme issuing or changes

-Running technique changes
